Stand Up and Walk
A true story of healing, hope, and the power of chiropractic care
Chiropractic gave my grandpa more time. My hope is that you’ll be the kind of friend who “nags” someone you care about—because that persistence just might save them, and give them more time too.
Grandpa hurt his lower back working in the limestone quarries in Bedford. It got so bad he could hardly work, and eventually, he could hardly walk. At just 48 years old, the medical doctors told him he’d need to go on disability. If you know anything about that generation, you know what a blow that is. This was a man who had dropped out of school at 15 to support his mom after his dad passed away. Being told he’d never work again crushed him.
But Grandpa had a friend who wouldn’t give up. Every time they talked, this friend told him to go see a chiropractor over in Bloomington. Grandpa always brushed it off: “I ain’t going to see some quack.”Weeks went by like this until finally the friend snapped: “Go to the chiropractor, and if he doesn’t help you, I’ll pay for the visit.”
Grandpa only went to shut his friend up—but by this point he couldn’t walk, and driving was out of the question. Grandma never drove a day in her life. So, here’s my dad’s favorite part of the story: at 13 years old, he got to drive Grandma and Grandpa all the way from Bedford to Bloomington. (Yes, times were a little different back then!)
The walls in the chiropractor’s office were paper thin, and Dad could hear everything. When the chiropractor adjusted Grandpa, he hollered so loud that Dad thought he was going to punch the doctor. Then the chiropractor simply said: “Stand up and walk.”
Grandpa shot back: “You’re ignorant. I didn’t walk in here—what makes you think I can walk now?”
But the chiropractor didn’t flinch. He repeated: “Stand up and walk.”
Guess what happened?
Grandpa stood up and walked.
And guess who drove home? … Not my dad.
Looking back now, I know Grandpa had a classic disc injury—antalgic lean, bilateral radiculopathy, weakness in his legs. Just like that old doc in Bloomington, we’ve had tremendous success helping similar cases. Patients who come in bent over, barely walking, and with pain shooting down their legs. And yes, I also get those funny looks when I tell someone, “Get up and walk.”
I share that story to tell you about a new therapy that can radically speed up recovery from disc injuries. Disc bulges and herniations are one of the top reasons people end up in back surgery—and too often, those surgeries don’t even work.
That’s why I’m so excited about Decompression Therapy. It restores injured discs, relieves pressure, and gives people back their lives—sometimes even letting them cancel surgeries altogether.
How many of you know someone who has “thrown their back out”?
Our next Decompression Workshop is on September 22 at 6:30pm. If you want to learn more and start your journey to spinal health, call us at 812-883-9779 to reserve your spot.
Grandpa kept going to that chiropractor faithfully, and it gave him years of work and life he otherwise would’ve lost.
Chiropractic gave Grandpa more time. Maybe it can do the same for you—or someone you care about.
Your friend,
Dr. Mosier
